REDMOND, Wash. — July 22, 2009 — Microsoft Corp. today announced the release to manufacturing (RTM) of Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2, the next versions of its flagship desktop and server operating systems. With the completion of this development phase, industry partners are readying products in time for the Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2 worldwide general launches. Windows 7 will be generally available to customers around the world on October 22, and Windows Server 2008 R2 will be generally available on or before that date. As always, current customers of the Windows Volume Licensing program, Microsoft Developer Network (MSDN) subscribers and TechNet subscribers will be among the first to get customer access to Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2 in the coming weeks.

Microsoft has started giving the public a taste of the next generation of its development platform and tools. In this regard, the Redmond company made available for download the first Beta builds of .NET Framework 4.0 and Visual Studio 2010. After being released only to MSDN subscribers on May 18, two days later, on May 20, the successors of Visual Studio 2008 and .Net Framework 3.5 were up for grabs with no restrictions, as Microsoft had opened up the testing process to all, not just participants with MSDN subscriptions.

“This beta does have full setup available so you can provision it yourself. The product is designed to work cleanly with VS2008, however like any pre-release software you should be careful about using the product on your main machine. We are not (yet) opening the product up for general ‘go live’ usage; our goal is to get your feedback on the feature set and direction we are headed,” revealed Jason Zander, general manager, Visual Studio, Developer Division, Visual Studio 2010 Beta 1.

According to the Redmond company Visual Studio 2010 Beta 1 is designed to play nice with a range of Windows platforms. In this regard the software giant indicated that the bits could be installed on both the 32-bit and the 64-bit flavors of Windows Vista (all SKUs with the exception of Starter edition), Windows XP SP2 and SP3, Windows Server 2003 SP1 and later, Windows Server 2003 R2 and later, Windows Server 2008 RTM and SP2, Windows Server 2008 R2 RC Enterprise and Windows 7 RC Ultimate.

Ribbon Controls components for creating Microsoft Office style ribbon interfaces. Enhancements to TButtons, TEdit, TListView, TTreeView, TLabel, themes, and Vista Aero support. New version of VCL for the Web for creating AJAX and Silverlight-enabled rich intranet and web applications.

4. Expanded Multi-Tier Database Technology
Next generation DataSnap. New ServerMethods give complete control over functionality of middle tier. Call procedures from server as if the code were right on the client. Continue to use familiar IAppServer interface while expanding power of application servers. No COM dependencies in new DataSnap framework. Easily migrate existing servers to the new architecture.

5. New Unicode, internationalization and localization
Unicode enabled throughout the IDE. Enhanced Integrated Translation Environment (ITE) to view and edit VCL forms and resource strings. Enhanced External Translation Manager (ETM) to view and edit language resource files outside the IDE. Enhanced Resource DLL Wizard to create Win32 resource DLLs for localization. Enhanced Translation Repository provides a database for translations that can be shared across projects.

6. New for COM and ActiveX
